Alternatives to Vinyl Siding
Why Not Vinyl?
When vinyl is placed upon a historic structure, it typically is a poor substitute for what had been on the structure before. The building can be negatively affected if "the width of the clapboards is altered, shadow reveals are reduced, and molding or trim is changed or removed at the corners, at cornices, or around windows and doors" - Preservation Brief 8 (http://www.nps.gov/hps/tps/briefs/brief08.htm). Siding such as this can also be placed on top of existing siding, reducing the depth and making features, such as windows, less distinct.

Siding and the replacement of building materials are common issues when it comes to historic preservation. This part of the site will help to give some perspective to what alternatives can be used in areas with more stringent demands, or just help to inform anyone who wants to do work on their historic structure.
Historic Applications
Examples of Cement Board in Historic Districts
Cement board has the highest approval rating for historic applications out of the current synthetic sidings. This is because of its ability to appear very similar to wood siding. Here are just some examples of approval in historic settings:
1. City of Beaufort, 313 King Street
2. Rockville, Maryland (limited approval)
3. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 15 Mt. Vernon Street

Staying True to the Form
Whenever siding is replaced on a historic structure, it should only be done if absolutely necessary because it is the removal of a piece of that structure's history that can not be replaced. So when a new choice is picked it should be as true to the original form as possible to keep coherency as well as the architectural impact of the original design. A rich heritage, in addition to new trends, makes for good cultural sustainability.
